[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Jung-yoon] The global cumulative number of confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) has surpassed 40 million.


According to the international statistics site Worldometer, as of 5:32 PM on the 18th, the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases worldwide reached 40,000,081. The cumulative death toll has exceeded 1,115,000.


The global cumulative confirmed cases surpassed 40 million, 293 days after China reported an unidentified pneumonia to the World Health Organization (WHO) on December 31 of last year.


The cumulative confirmed cases exceeded 10 million on June 27, 20 million on August 10, and 30 million on September 17, respectively.


By country, the United States had the highest cumulative confirmed cases at 8,343,140, followed by India (7,494,551), Brazil (5,224,362), and Russia (1,399,334). The United States also had the highest cumulative death toll at 224,283. Brazil (153,690), India (114,064), Mexico (86,059), the United Kingdom (43,579), and Italy (36,474) followed in order.
