[Asia Economy Reporter Donghoon Jeong] The police have begun a detention center visitation investigation targeting Pastor Jeon Gwang-hoon of Sarang Jeil Church, who is accused of obstructing the epidemiological investigation by health authorities.
The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency's Intelligent Crime Investigation Unit sent investigators to Seoul Detention Center on the 15th to question Pastor Jeon about whether Sarang Jeil Church was involved in partially omitting and concealing the list of church members after a COVID-19 cluster infection occurred.
Pastor Jeon was indicted in March this year on charges of preliminary electioneering ahead of the 21st general election (violation of the Public Official Election Act) and defamation against President Moon Jae-in. Pastor Jeon was detained during the investigation but was released on bail in April. However, he participated in various rallies, including the August 15 Liberation Day rally, violating bail conditions, which led to the cancellation of his bail on the 7th of last month and his re-incarceration at Seoul Detention Center.
The police attempted to summon Pastor Jeon for questioning after he was discharged from COVID-19 treatment earlier last month, but the investigation was delayed due to his re-incarceration.
