Mars Visible to the Naked Eye... Miss Tonight and Wait 15 Years

Mars Visible to the Naked Eye... Miss Tonight and Wait 15 Years Mars photographed by British astrophotographer Damian Peach on the 30th of last month. Photo by Damian Peach.

[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bong-ju] Tonight (the 14th), Mars, the largest and brightest to the naked eye, is expected to be visible.

Mars will be as close as 62 million km to Earth, and at the same time, Mars, Earth, and the Sun will be perfectly aligned in a straight line at the position called "opposition," making Mars the second brightest object in the night sky after Venus.

This is the closest distance in 17 years since Mars approached Earth at 54 million km in 2003.

Tonight, Mars will shine red in the night sky and can be observed with the naked eye.

To see Mars, look toward the eastern and southern sky between sunset around 6 PM and midnight.

Mars will rise in the eastern sky after sunset today and reach its highest point in the southern sky around midnight.

A Mars this large and bright will not be seen again until 2035, 15 years from now.
