November 2-22 Festival Official Website... Expecting Revitalization of Kimchi Industry
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 11th that the Gwangju World Kimchi Festival, scheduled to be held from the 2nd to the 22nd of next month, will be held as a safe online festival instead of an outdoor gathering event with a high risk of COVID-19 infection.
This year’s Gwangju World Kimchi Festival will be held on the official festival website under the slogan “Click Gwangju Kimchi at Home!” to suit the characteristics of an online festival.
Anyone can participate in various programs and events on the website, learn the kimchi-making secrets from the Presidential Award winners, and purchase Gwangju kimchi at prices cheaper than market prices during the festival period.
The main festival programs include ▲ ‘Gwangju Kimchi Online Market,’ where local kimchi companies participate to sell Gwangju kimchi online at affordable prices ▲ ‘Unique Kimchi Cooking Online Class,’ which offers 10 unique recipes using kimchi through YouTube and other online platforms for cooking experiences ▲ ‘Premium Kimchi Online Special Lecture,’ where the kimchi-making secrets of Presidential Award winners are taught online ▲ and ‘Gwangju Kimchi Online Supporters,’ recruiting supporters online to participate in kimchi mukbang and cooking activities.
In particular, considering changing eating habits, the Gwangju Kimchi Online Market will sell unique kimchi products such as ‘Vegan Kimchi,’ made only with plant-based ingredients instead of animal-based salted seafood, and ‘Single-serving Kimchi’ for one-person households during the festival period.
Additionally, various fun discount events such as Kimchi Lotto, Guerrilla Super Deals, and Kimchi Quiz will be available for pre-registration on the official festival website, which will be launched on the 12th, and online supporters will also be recruited through the official festival website from the 12th to the 23rd.
The finals of the Korea Kimchi Contest will be held on the 13th of next month, and the Kimchi Applied Cooking Contest will be held the following day, the 14th, at Gwangju Kimchi Town in Imaam-dong, Nam-gu.
Due to the nature of the programs, offline events such as the Korea Kimchi Contest, which are unavoidable, will accept applications on the Gwangju World Kimchi Festival website until the 14th and hold the contests at Kimchi Town during the festival period.
Gwangju City will conduct a more diverse and abundant Gwangju Kimchi Festival in connection with the ‘2020 Korea Sale Festa,’ a representative discount event promoted by the government in the second half of the year to stimulate consumption and revitalize the domestic economy.
Through this, it is expected that the Gwangju World Kimchi Festival will establish itself as Gwangju’s representative festival, continuously loved by citizens, while boosting sales in the Gwangju kimchi industry through revitalized consumption and domestic demand, and gaining momentum to spread awareness of Gwangju kimchi nationwide.
Park Nam-eon, Director of the City’s Job and Economy Office, said, “The kimchi festival, which was held at the Kimchi Center for a limited period, will become a bigger and more accessible festival beyond time and space as it is held online,” and added, “We will create a fun and beneficial festival that surpasses offline festivals in terms of kimchi sales, the geographic range of participants, and program diversity.”
