Baemin Unveils 'Euljiro 10 Years Later Font' to Celebrate Hangul Day

A New Typeface Blending Euljiro's Sentiment with Traces of Time

Baemin Unveils 'Euljiro 10 Years Later Font' to Celebrate Hangul Day

[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Cheol-hyun] Baedal Minjok (hereinafter Baemin) has unveiled a follow-up to the font 'Euljiroche' released on Hangul Day last year. Woowa Brothers, the operator of Baemin (CEO Kim Beom-jun), announced on the 9th that they will distribute Baemin's ninth font, 'Euljiro 10 Years Later Font,' for free on their homepage 'Woowahan.com' in celebration of Hangul Day.

The newly introduced Euljiro 10 Years Later Font incorporates the concept of time into the font that was released for free a year ago. While last year's Euljiroche, launched on Hangul Day, was inspired by the signboards in the Euljiro area and expressed the spatial feeling in the font, this time it reflects the passage of 10 years, creating a faded form reminiscent of the original Euljiroche. In particular, the 50 most frequently used particles become progressively blurred in three stages the more they are typed using the Euljiro 10 Years Later Font.

Euljiroche and Euljiro 10 Years Later Font are results of Baemin's 'City and Letters' project, which started last year, aimed at reinterpreting everyday fonts. They reinterpret the brush calligraphy style seen on the signboards of Euljiro's tool street, preserving the thick brushstroke feel while finishing it smoothly.

Woowa Brothers has been releasing free fonts every year on Hangul Day to promote the beauty of Hangul by reinterpreting street sign letters with Baemin's unique sensibility. Starting with 'Hanna Font' in 2012, followed by 'Jua Font' in 2014, 'Dohyun Font' in 2015, 'Yeonseong Font' in 2016, 'Gilanghaerang Font' in 2017, and 'Hanna Font Air/Pro' in 2018. Baemin's fonts have gained attention for their distinctive and practical designs and are widely used not only by the general public but also in publishing, broadcasting, and advertising.

Han Myung-soo, Head of Creative Division at Woowa Brothers, said, "Euljiro 10 Years Later Font is a new font that captures the unique sentiment of Euljiro, which has become a new sanctuary for hipsters, along with the passage of time." He added, "Baemin will continue to develop fonts that embody the sentiments of various regions in Korea to promote the beauty and charm of Hangul."

Meanwhile, Woowa Brothers is also holding an event for readers in collaboration with artists through their webtoon platform Manhwakyung in celebration of Hangul Day. From 2 PM to midnight on the same day, Manhwakyung will distribute sound effect brushes for free to all people who draw. Sound effect brushes are files designed to easily insert sound effects expressed as letters in webtoons and are often purchased through crowdfunding. This free distribution version features handwritten letters by 12 artists active on Manhwakyung, offering unique styles not found elsewhere. It is expected that new artists will be able to use various sound effect brushes in their webtoons without financial burden through this distribution.
