'Misogyny Controversy' Everytime, Korea Communications Standards Commission Recommends 'Strengthening Self-Regulation'

[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] Everytime, which faced a 'misogyny controversy,' has received a recommendation to strengthen self-regulation from the Korea Communications Standards Commission.

On the 8th, the Communications Review Subcommittee of the Korea Communications Standards Commission resolved to recommend 'strengthening self-regulation' regarding discriminatory and derogatory information based on gender, region, and specific targets on the anonymous university student community site 'Everytime.' Everytime is a community site where users can only access the bulletin board of their enrolled or alma mater university after membership registration and school verification.

Earlier, the university feminist community 'UnivFemi' revealed in July that after investigating Everytime at over 20 universities for three months starting in April this year, they found 550 hateful posts that had not been deleted, of which 47% contained misogynistic content.

The Korea Communications Standards Commission stated, "Considering that this site is a community platform used by the majority of university students and has significant influence, and that information and communication service providers and users have a duty to fulfill their responsibilities, we resolved to recommend 'strengthening self-regulation' urging the operator to actively prepare countermeasures."

They added, "We plan to strongly request that the operator take substantial and proactive measures to prevent the distribution of discriminatory and derogatory information," emphasizing, "We will continue to actively review content that discriminates against or promotes prejudice against specific targets."
