Traditional Korean Musician Song Sohee Presents Collaborative Performance with Orchestra

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] “Hello. I am Gugak artist Song Sohee. These days, I feel quite regretful to greet you only through videos. I hope you are all staying healthy. I have prepared a performance for the residents of Yongsan-gu.”

Yongsan-gu (Mayor Seong Janghyun) presented an online performance by 3 Divas (DIVA, female singers) on the district office’s YouTube and Facebook channels on the 7th.

This was part of the 2020 Resident Ensemble Development Support Project for performance venues, supported by the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture.

The program was designed to help local residents feel more familiar with classical music, and was prepared to guarantee cultural life in daily routines through various performances and experiences.

Due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, the performance was recorded without an audience. The actual performance took place on the 15th of last month at the Yongsan Art Hall Grand Theater. The district invited three divas renowned for their top skills in classical music, Gugak, and musicals, and prepared a collaborative stage with an orchestra.

The Mostly Philharmonic Orchestra (hereafter MPO), which organized the performance, arranged the overall stage music. Then, soprano Oh Eun-kyung, Gugak artist Song Sohee, and singer Park Ki-young took the stage to perform.

The program included 11 pieces, starting with Tchaikovsky’s Italian Capriccio (MPO), followed by “Dear Marquis” from the operetta Die Fledermaus (Oh Eun-kyung), “Boat Song” and “Jajin Boat Song” (Song Sohee), and “The Two Letters of Goodbye Are Too Short” (Park Ki-young). The performance lasted about 60 minutes.

Those who wish to watch the performance can search for Yongsan-gu Office on YouTube or Facebook and click on the 3 Divas concert content to watch it for free.

MPO, which organized the event, was founded in 2003 as a pioneer in popularizing classical music. It has gained fame through active performances such as the complete Beethoven symphony concert in 2012 and the complete Tchaikovsky symphony concert in 2013.

Since 2016, the district has collaborated with MPO on cultural projects including concerts and lectures, and plans to continue with concerts such as ▲ “Korean Folktales Heard Through Symphonic Poems” (November 20) and ▲ “A Day in Music with Mostly Ensemble” (December 3), in addition to the 3 Divas concert.

Seong Janghyun, Mayor of Yongsan-gu, said, “We held an online concert for residents who are struggling and exhausted due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic. Since the performance can be enjoyed anytime through YouTube and Facebook, we hope many interested people will watch it.”
