Danny Lee (New Zealand) became embroiled in controversy last month at the US Open, a major on the PGA Tour.
It happened on the 18th hole (par 4, 469 yards) green during the third round. After missing two short putts from 1.2 meters, he lost his temper and displayed unsportsmanlike behavior, described as "Danny Lee Goes Whack-A-Mole." He went back and forth on the hole, eventually making 6 putts and losing 5 strokes, resulting in a quintuple bogey. After holing out, he even struck his golf bag with his putter. This scene was broadcast live and naturally drew criticism from both domestic and international media.
Danny Lee later apologized on social media for his "poor action." He reflected, saying, "I was unprofessional and foolish." He vowed, "Next time I'll show up as a better person and have better sportsmanship." However, he had already left a significant blemish on the PGA Tour. Golf has always been regarded as a gentleman's game.
Above all, manners come first. Demonstrating sportsmanship and courtesy is most important. All golfers should demonstrate a high degree of sportsmanship and courtesy at all times. One should keep in mind the famous quote from Ben Hogan (USA), the "father of modern golf": "I'd like to be known as a gentleman first, and then as a golfer."
There is a Scottish proverb that says, "Manners make good golfers." Americans say, "Where are your manners?" when they see a golfer with poor manners. About others, they say, "He has no manners." Good manners create good memories. The worst manners brand a person as someone you do not want to meet again.
A: As you know, golf is a game of manners and etiquette. Where are your manners, Mr. Lee?
B: What do you mean by that?
A: Your worst quality is that you get angry on the putting green. You must control your anger.
B: Oh, I'm sorry.
A: Remember your manners.
