[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Junho] A domestic team took first place in a global competition that tests artificial intelligence (AI) technology for detecting people and objects in drone-captured videos.
The Korea Aerospace Research Institute announced on the 6th that a team formed with Sungkyunkwan University (team name DroneEye 2020) won first place at the 2020 VisDrone World Challenge.
The category in which the domestic team participated was object detection. Their excellence in technology that uses AI to detect objects such as people and cars in drone-captured videos was recognized. This competition has been held annually since 2018 by I(E)CCV, one of the world's top AI conferences.
KARI and Sungkyunkwan University demonstrated technology that can recognize multiple sizes and shapes of objects on the ground, such as people and cars, which change according to the drone's flight altitude.
KARI plans to equip the drone multi-object detection technology in the future 'Swarm Reconnaissance Drone System.' This system is expected to be used for searching missing persons over wide areas in a short time, monitoring residual fires, and military reconnaissance.
