Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport to Prepare for Autonomous Driving Era with 20,000 km of Precise Road Maps in 2022

[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo In-ho] The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on the 4th that it will additionally build high-definition road maps for approximately 14,000 km of national highways nationwide by 2022.

High-definition road maps (scale 1:500) are precise electronic maps that represent lanes, signs, road facilities, and surrounding infrastructure in three dimensions. They are used as fundamental infrastructure for autonomous driving technology development and vehicle-to-road cooperative driving systems (C-ITS).

Containing 14 types of information such as lanes, stop lines, safety signs, arrows, and traffic lights, these maps enable precise location identification of autonomous vehicles even in adverse weather conditions or when GPS reception is poor.

The Ministry of Land has completed building high-definition road maps for about 6,000 km of expressways and major urban areas nationwide and is expanding the scope to general national highways starting this year.

In particular, the budget for next year includes 16 billion KRW to produce high-definition road maps for general national highways in four regions: the Seoul metropolitan area, Gangwon region, Jeolla region, and Gyeongsang region by next year.

Through this, approximately 20,000 km of high-definition road maps centered on arterial roads nationwide are expected to be built by the end of 2022.

Meanwhile, the National Geographic Information Institute provided over 18,000 high-definition road maps to more than 1,200 institutions and companies through the National Land Information Platform by August this year. The provided maps are being used for the development of urban autonomous vehicles and other purposes.

The Ministry of Land plans to expand the utilization of high-definition road maps by applying them to tasks such as frequent updates of the national base map and renewal of general national highway road registers, and additionally build high-definition road maps for local roads and county roads with four or more lanes by 2025.
