Daedong Hospital, Suspect Alopecia if More Than 100 Hairs Fall Out Per Day
May Worsen with Folk Remedies... Professional Diagnosis and Cause-Removal Treatment Essential
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] When is the season that people with hair loss symptoms dislike the most? Autumn is a season particularly disliked by those worried about hair loss.
The scalp, which suffered from strong ultraviolet rays and high humidity during summer, tends to become dry in the cool autumn breeze.
Also, due to the large temperature difference between day and night, the oil and moisture balance of the scalp is disrupted, causing excessive buildup of dead skin cells and reducing the activity of hair follicle cells, leading to increased hair loss.
Hair loss generally refers to the loss of thick, black hair called seongmo. Losing about 50 to 70 hairs a day is not a concern, but if more than 100 hairs fall out, hair loss disorder should be suspected.
According to the National Interest Disease Statistics released by the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service, the number of people treated for hair loss increased by 12%, from 208,534 in 2015 to 233,628 in 2019.
Among them, men accounted for 55.1% and women 44.9%. By age group, people in their 40s were the largest at 23.5%, followed by those in their 30s at 22.2%, and those in their 20s at 18.1%.
The causes of hair loss are very diverse. Representative causes include the influence of male hormones, medications, immune system issues, childbirth, surgery, nutritional deficiencies, and stress.
Hair loss is classified into male pattern hair loss, female pattern hair loss, alopecia areata, and telogen effluvium.
Treatment for hair loss begins with analyzing the type and then removing the cause. In severe cases, active treatments such as medication therapy and immunotherapy can improve the condition.
However, experts say that unverified treatments such as folk remedies can worsen hair loss, so it is important to consult a dermatologist for an accurate diagnosis and receive treatment at the appropriate time.
Dr. Kim Chorok, head of dermatology at Daedong Hospital, said, “Regardless of gender or age, hair loss causes severe stress due to cosmetic concerns and can lead to loss of self-esteem and depression, so early active treatment is important.”
Dr. Kim advised, “Especially from the 20s to 30s, hair gradually thins and hair loss progresses, so younger people should not be complacent and should adopt lifestyle habits to prevent hair loss.”
Dermatologists say that cleanliness of the hair is the most important for preventing hair loss. It is good to create enough foam with the right amount of shampoo and apply it evenly to the scalp and hair. Using the fingerprint part of the fingers, massage gently and rinse thoroughly to ensure no shampoo residue remains.
Using water or air that is too hot when washing or drying hair can irritate the scalp, damaging the cuticle layer and proteins, or disrupting the oil and moisture balance, so lukewarm water or air is recommended.
When using a hairdryer, keep a certain distance from the hair. Leaving hair wet without drying creates a humid scalp environment conducive to bacterial growth, which should be avoided.
If you have outdoor activities on days with strong ultraviolet rays, wear a hat, and try to wash your hair in the evening to remove dust and waste accumulated during daily life.
A Daedong Hospital official said, “Avoid excessive dieting to ensure sufficient nutrients are supplied to hair roots, maintain a balanced diet rich in protein and minerals, and reduce alcohol consumption and smoking as they are harmful to hair.”
