Jeonnam Province Selected as an Excellent Local Government for 'Job Policy' for 6 Consecutive Years

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Jeonnam Province has been honored as an excellent local government in job policy for six consecutive years.

Jeonnam Province announced on the 29th that it received the "Excellence Award" at the "2020 National Local Government Job Awards Ceremony" hosted by the Ministry of Employment and Labor.

The Ministry of Employment and Labor's nationwide local government job awards ceremony has been promoted since 2010 to enhance regional responsibility and autonomy in job creation.

Every year, all local governments nationwide are comprehensively evaluated on their job policy plans, execution, performance, and changes in employment indicators, and excellent local governments are awarded.

This year, by receiving the "Excellence Award," the province earned the honor of being selected as an excellent local government in job policy for six consecutive years.

Among the cities and counties in the province, Gwangyang City received the grand prize, Yeosu City and Gangjin County received the highest award, Jangseong County received the excellence award, and Hwasun County received a special award, recognizing the province's job-centered administration by the government. It was also confirmed that linkage and cooperation with cities and counties for creating good jobs have been established.

Last year, the number of employed people in the province increased by 13,000, and the number of unemployed decreased by 2,000.

Also, the employment rate rose by 1.2 percentage points, youth employment rate by 0.8 percentage points, economic activity participation rate by 0.9 percentage points, and the unemployment rate dropped by 0.2 percentage points, improving major employment indicators and maintaining a top national ranking, earning high scores in quantitative evaluation.

In qualitative evaluation, the local government head's commitment to job policy implementation and key job projects received high marks.

Governor Kim Young-rok of Jeonnam has externally demonstrated a strong will for job creation by making his "first approval" and "first event" related to job affairs after taking office.

He is vigorously promoting various job pledges of the 7th local government, including the "Jeonnam Job Platform Establishment," "Jeonnam-type Basic Income System and Farmer Salary System Introduction," and "Youth Startup Farming Town Creation."

Also, the expansion and elevation of the dedicated job department "Job Policy Headquarters," the establishment of the "Win-Win Job Team," and the nationwide first promotion of the "Province-City-County Job Creation Win-Win Agreement" for creating good jobs reflect the prioritization of job affairs in provincial administration and direct management, which was reflected in the evaluation.

In particular, the discovery and promotion of projects related to the "Clean Jeonnam Blue Economy," a sustainable growth engine and job creation project in Jeonnam, the creation of the Jeonnam-type win-win job model "Shinan 8.2GW Offshore Wind Power Complex," and farmer and fisherman job stabilization projects such as "Farmer and Fisherman Public Interest Allowance" and "Farmer Salary System" received excellent evaluations as leading job policies responding to population decline and youth outflow.

Baek Taek-hyu, head of Jeonnam Province Job Policy Headquarters, said, "We feel a heavy responsibility as the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic continues to cause economic recession and employment crisis," adding, "We will do our best with cities and counties to stabilize employment and create jobs, and we will study and refine Jeonnam's job policies more deeply to become a national model."
