[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Gyeonggi Province Governor Lee Jae-myung expressed support for Democratic Party floor leader Kim Tae-nyeon’s “principled judgment and decision” regarding his reported suggestion that Democratic Party lawmaker Jeong Jeong-sun, against whom an arrest warrant has been requested on charges including violation of the Political Funds Act, should appear before the prosecution.
On the 29th, Governor Lee stated on Twitter, “The privilege against arrest exists for the public interest,” adding, “In a country where all are equal before the law, there should be no sanctuary in investigations unless it is unjust.”
He further added, “I support Floor Leader Kim Tae-nyeon’s principled judgment and decision.”
Earlier, Floor Leader Kim reportedly requested lawmaker Jeong Jeong-sun to appear before the prosecution after an arrest warrant was requested against her on charges including violations of the Political Funds Act, the Public Official Election Act, and the Personal Information Protection Act. Lawmaker Jeong had refused the prosecution’s summons, citing the regular National Assembly schedule as the reason.
Currently, members of the National Assembly are guaranteed immunity from arrest and cannot be arrested or detained during sessions unless caught in the act.
The Democratic Party has stated its intention to handle the motion for consent to arrest lawmaker Jeong in accordance with the National Assembly Act.
