[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Jae-hee] The Washington Post (WP), a leading American daily newspaper, has officially declared its support for Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden.

On the 28th (local time), WP published an editorial titled "Biden for President" on its online opinion page. WP stated, "Many voters are willing to vote to remove the worst president," and affirmed that Biden is the right person to address the challenges facing the United States.

WP cited the challenges facing the U.S. as including the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), increasing inequality and racial discrimination, authoritarianism, and the decline of democracy.

The newspaper said, "These challenges were created, ignored, or worsened by the incumbent," and added, "Biden will restore America's dignity, honor, and capability."

It also analyzed, "Trump's example has proven how important dignity, empathy, and respect for others are as presidential virtues," and contrasted Biden's deep empathy with Trump's narcissism.

In particular, WP praised Biden's choice of Senator Kamala Harris, who had criticized him, as his vice-presidential nominee, saying it showed he would govern based on values rather than grudges.

It continued, "Instead of imposing tariffs on South Korea, Europe, and Canada, Biden will cooperate with allies in trade, making the U.S. a welcoming place for entrepreneurs and scientists worldwide."

WP also described Biden as the person who will rebuild America's leadership on the global stage. The newspaper stated, "In foreign policy, Biden offers positive change by pledging to rebuild long-standing alliances and global leadership deliberately dismantled by Trump."

It further mentioned, "Biden rejects Trump's self-destructive America First principle and will join hands with other countries to face global challenges," citing the restoration of relations with NATO, rejoining the Paris Agreement and the Iran nuclear deal, restoring ties with the World Health Organization (WHO), and multilateral efforts against COVID-19.

The newspaper said, "Both Trump and Biden promise to be 'tough' on China, but Biden's approach is based on values rather than whim or deal-making," adding, "He will seek alliances and cooperation at points of converging interests such as climate change and health security while confronting Chinese aggression."

It added, "Democracy is in crisis worldwide and in the U.S.," and stated, "The U.S. needs a president who respects public officials, upholds the rule of law, acknowledges Congress's constitutional role, and works for the public good rather than private interests." It reiterated, "A president with the know-how and experience to show that values and results can go hand in hand is needed."
