At AlgwaHaek Small Theater in Daehangno until October 3rd
[Asia Economy Reporter Byunghee Park] The theater company 'Gori' is performing its 20th anniversary production 'Sumbisori' at the Algwahak Small Theater in Daehangno until October 3rd.
'Sumbisori' is an original play depicting the life of a woman in her 70s suffering from dementia. Sumbisori refers to the sound a haenyeo (female diver) makes when surfacing from the sea to exhale the breath she held. In the play, Sumbisori expresses the desire to recount beautiful old memories of the remaining life and to conclude the rest of life with a beautiful soul.
Actress Jeon Gukhyang plays the mother with dementia, and Kim Jaeman plays her son. Jeon Gukhyang won the 2017 Korean Theater Actors Association 'Actor of the Year' award and recently appeared in the film 'Kim Ji-young, Born 1982' and the drama 'Would You Like to Have Dinner Together?'. She also played the same role in 'Sumbisori' three years ago. Kim Jaeman won the Best Actor Award at the 28th Geochang International Theater Festival and is actively performing on various stages including musicals 'We Will Rock You', 'Sold Out', and the play 'Are You Okay?'.
The theater company Gori is dedicated to original plays. Although it is their 20th anniversary this year, they are staging the commemorative performance with difficulty due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 'Sumbisori' is the third 20th anniversary commemorative performance following 'Mother' in January and 'Are You Okay?' in June.
The company stated that considering the difficult times, they decided on a short one-week run and will strictly adhere to safety measures such as theater disinfection and socially distanced seating during the performances.
