[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] The National Association of Mayors, County Governors, and District Heads (President Hwang Myung-seon, Mayor of Nonsan) has appointed the executive members of the national association who will lead the third year of the 7th local government administration.


The national association's executive members, along with the co-chair group, consist of a total of 18 members, including 15 regional chairpersons elected by province and city, and 3 county governor representatives.


Lee Dong-jin, Mayor of Dobong District, Seoul (photo), was appointed as the standing vice president of the national association. The vice presidents (6 members) include Lee Jae-soo, Mayor of Chuncheon, and Heo Seong-gon, Mayor of Gimhae (both representing mayors), Hwang Suk-joo, County Governor of Sunchang, and Baek Seon-gi, County Governor of Chilgok (both representing county governors), as well as Jang Jong-tae, Mayor of Seo District, Daejeon, and Jeong Cheon-seok, Mayor of Dong District, Ulsan (both representing district heads).


Additionally, the auditors (2 members) of the national association are Go Nam-seok, Mayor of Yeonsu District, Incheon, and Moon In, Mayor of Buk District, Gwangju. Kim Woo-ryong, Mayor of Dongnae District, Busan, was appointed as the spokesperson.


Furthermore, Hong Seong-yeol, County Governor of Jeungpyeong, was appointed as the chairman of the Special Committee on Local Autonomy and Decentralization established within the association. The three county governor representatives will be appointed later.


President Hwang Myung-seon stated, “To strengthen the status and protect the rights of city, county, and district local governments, expand local finances, revise laws related to local decentralization, and promote constitutional amendments for decentralized local governance, we will gather wisdom with the newly appointed national association executives to consider and respond together to major issues.”


The term of office for the national association executives, including the newly appointed president, is until the end of June 2022 (2 years). They will set the main directions for the national association's activities and take overall responsibility for its operation until the end of the 7th local government administration.


The National Association of Mayors, County Governors, and District Heads is a legal consultative body under Article 165 of the Local Autonomy Act, consisting of 228 members including mayors, county governors, and autonomous district heads nationwide (including 2 associate members). It performs functions such as consulting on common local issues and representing local opinions to promote regional development, local autonomy, and decentralization.
