[Asia Economy Reporter Song Seung-yoon] The People's Solidarity for Participatory Democracy criticized the police's decision to completely block the planned vehicle protest rally in downtown Seoul on National Foundation Day by some conservative groups as an excessive measure.
On the 28th, the People's Solidarity for Participatory Democracy issued a statement saying, "It is true that public anxiety is high over the possibility of a large-scale spread repeating, as seen after the August 15 Liberation Day rally, amid the ongoing COVID-19 surge," but added, "The response to completely block the rally is excessive."
They stated, "Even in a crisis situation, the basic principles of democracy should not be taken for granted to be violated," and argued, "The police should consider how not to infringe on the rights to assembly and protest despite the constraints of quarantine."
The People's Solidarity for Participatory Democracy also addressed the rally organizers, saying, "There is no right that threatens the life and safety of citizens," and urged, "The organizers must face the deep concerns of the public and make every effort to comply with quarantine guidelines to the fullest extent."
