[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Seo Young-seo] On the 28th, Sinan-gun, Jeollanam-do announced that it has been officially certified by the Korea Records Institute as holding the highest record for having the most and longest sea dikes in the country.
Due to its characteristic as a region made up of islands, Sinan-gun has constructed sea dikes to protect farmland from seawater. The number of these sea dikes is 547, accounting for 33% of the nationwide total of 1,673, and the total length is 276 km, which is 23% of the national total of 1,195.7 km.
Since before the 1900s, reclamation projects have been carried out to solve food shortages by building sea dikes to create salt fields and farmland. The sea dikes range from the shortest, the Nunchi Sea Dike at 40 meters, to the longest, the Dorak Sea Dike at 5.1 km, totaling 547 sea dikes.
Currently, keeping pace with the times, the functions of the sea dikes are being expanded to develop unique courses such as coastal roads and bicycle paths that offer the joy of walking, aiming to grow into a future tourism industry.
The Korea Records Institute KRI Record Verification Service team comprehensively reviewed the sea dike management status submitted by Sinan-gun, aerial photos, actual photos, third-party verification documents, and the record challenge overview from March to July over four months, and confirmed the certification as the new official highest record of the Korea Records Institute in the category of ‘the most and longest sea dikes within a single local government jurisdiction.’
After receiving the highest record certification from the Korea Records Institute, Sinan-gun plans to pursue registration with the World Record Committee (WRC) in the United States and the Guinness Book of Records.
