Jeonnam National University Next President Candidate No.1 'Professor Jeong Seong-taek'

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Professor Jeong Seong-taek, who was nominated as the next president candidate of Chonnam National University, received the most support from university members by presenting the vision of a ‘Confident and Free Chonnam National University Person (Chonnam Daehak-in).’


According to Chonnam National University on the 28th, Professor Jeong Seong-taek, who was ranked first in the 21st Chonnam National University president appointment candidate selection, received 704 votes out of 1,366 valid votes in the final runoff election held on the 23rd by pledging to create a ‘university strong in change and convergence, a dignified university leading the era.’


Candidate Jeong Seong-taek said, “I am grateful for the support and encouragement from local residents and university members,” and added, “I will devote myself wholeheartedly with an attitude to continue the development of Chonnam National University.”


He continued, “The external environment of universities is rapidly changing with the Fourth Industrial Revolution, K-New Deal, the emergence of the digital ecosystem, and the With-Corona era, and Chonnam National University is also being asked to make changes suitable for the times,” emphasizing, “I will create the future of Chonnam National University through stable change and mutually beneficial convergence.”


To this end, he proposed five changes: ▲restoring the status of a flagship national university ▲innovation of the education system ▲creation of a research-industry-academic ecosystem ▲reorganization of administration and governance ▲strengthening welfare for happy companionship.


He also declared that convergence will be achieved in four areas: convergence between majors and academic disciplines, harmony among members, coexistence with local communities, the nation, and globally, and linkage between the past, present, and future.


Along with this, he expressed his ambition to nurture free Chonnam National University people who lead the era of transition through education, to lead sustainable research innovation and future value, and to make ‘Our Proud Chonnam National University’ externally recognized.


Jeong Seong-taek, the first-ranked candidate, graduated from the medical school of Chonnam National University and received his master’s and doctoral degrees from the same university. He has served as the Dean of Student Affairs and Director of Planning and Coordination at Chonnam National University. He has published over 160 papers and 9 books.


He has served as a policy advisory member of the Asia Culture Institute, civil mediation committee member of the Gwangju District Court, textbook editorial committee member and industry-academic cooperation special committee member of the Korean Orthopaedic Association, president of the Korean Society of Pediatric Orthopaedics, president of the Korean Society for Limb Lengthening and Reconstruction, and president of the Korean Musculoskeletal Tumor Society.
