"President Moon, Clear Dereliction of Duty... Were You Asleep?"
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] Ahn Cheol-soo, leader of the People’s Party, criticized the ruling party on the 28th regarding the North Korean shooting incident involving a missing public official from Yeonpyeong Island, saying, “The ruling party’s bodyguards claim that if President Moon Jae-in were former President Park Geun-hye, then where would Choi Soon-sil be?” He added, “All of you who, moved by a single notification letter, defend North Korea and prevent the president from fulfilling his duties as president are all Choi Soon-sil.”
At the Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly that day, Ahn said, “President Moon has abandoned the presidential oath to ‘uphold the Constitution, protect the nation, and strive to promote the freedom and welfare of the people’ like a discarded object during the process of our citizen’s summary execution,” calling it “a clear dereliction of duty.”
Ahn pointed out, “Reviewing this incident reveals that both the president and South Korea’s national security and safety systems are all broken,” and “the helpless and incompetent state of the nation exposed during the Sewol ferry disaster has been reproduced exactly this time.”
Ahn emphasized, “Why was the president absent from the relevant ministers’ meeting? Was he sleeping? If he was sleeping, why did no one wake him up? Is there not a single aide around the president who can wake him in a national emergency? Or did the president previously instruct that no words or actions should provoke the other side regarding inter-Korean issues? This must be thoroughly investigated.”
Ahn stated, “The entire truth of the shooting incident must be thoroughly investigated, and those responsible and related parties must be severely punished. This applies to both North and South Korea,” and added, “Although the government belatedly requested a joint investigation with North Korea, what matters is enforcement and proper cooperation during the joint investigation. If North Korea does not cooperate, this incident should be referred to the UN Security Council.”
Ahn said, “I hope a thorough investigation and accountability will be carried out for all related ministries, including the military authorities, who mishandled the initial response and stood by doing nothing even as our citizen was killed and burned,” and added, “Who decided not to immediately inform the president? Who, despite needing to urge the president’s decision, took no action because they were trying to appease the mood? They must be rooted out and held fully accountable.”
Ahn also demanded, “Appropriate measures must be taken against those who insulted the deceased and fueled public anger with insane remarks,” and said, “While the insane remnants of the ruling party are inevitable, immediate personnel action must be taken against Jeong Se-hyun, the Senior Vice Chairman of the Democratic Peaceful Unification Advisory Council, who made outrageous remarks calling this an opportunity to improve inter-Korean relations.”
