56% Respondents Say Next President Should Nominate Ginsburg's Successor
[Asia Economy New York=Correspondent Baek Jong-min] With the U.S. presidential race just over a month from the finish line and the first TV debate scheduled for this week, Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden is showing an 8% lead in approval ratings over President Donald Trump. Additionally, 56% of respondents said that the winner of the November election should nominate a successor to the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
According to a nationwide joint poll (margin of error ±3.5%) conducted by The New York Times (NYT) and Siena College from October 22 to 24 with 950 voters nationwide, Biden led President Trump by 8 percentage points with 49% support compared to Trump's 41%. In a separate poll released the same day by ABC News and The Washington Post, Biden led by 10 percentage points, with 54% support versus Trump's 44%.
Biden received strong support from female voters. In the NYT poll, female voters preferred Biden over Trump by 53% to 37%, a 16-point lead, while male voters showed equal support for Biden and Trump at 45% each.
By race, white voters favored Trump with 49% to 42%, but among voters of color, Biden had an overwhelming lead with 66% compared to Trump's 22%.
In the NYT poll, 56% of respondents said the next president should appoint a successor to Justice Ginsburg, while 41% said President Trump should make the nomination.
Since this poll is a nationwide aggregate, it may not be a definitive indicator of the election outcome, but it reconfirms Biden's continued lead.
The RealClearPolitics average of nationwide polls shows Biden leading President Trump by 7 percentage points. In the six key battleground states that will decide the election, Biden holds a 3.8 percentage point advantage over Trump.
