Lotte World Tower Creates 'COVID-19' Hope Rainbow Every Night

[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Hye-sun] Lotte World Tower will light up a rainbow of hope for those facing difficulties during the special Chuseok quarantine period due to the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19).

Lotte World Tower, operated by Lotte Corporation, announced on the 27th that it will sequentially display rainbow colors on the building’s exterior walls and crown (tower lantern section) for two months starting in September. The lighting will be shown every day from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., with the seven colors of the rainbow?red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet?illuminated for 10 minutes at every hour and half-hour, lighting up the Seoul night sky.

The ‘rainbow’ has been used worldwide as a symbol to support medical staff and children going through difficult times due to COVID-19. It began in Italy, where cities were locked down, by placing rainbow drawings on windows with the message “Everything will be okay” to spread hope. Additionally, in various countries such as the UK and the US, from ordinary people to famous artists, activities using the rainbow motif have continued to express gratitude to healthcare workers.

Lotte World Tower also plans to hold the ‘Lotta Rainbow Drawing Challenge’ from October 8 to 22 through its official social network service (SNS) accounts. This event was designed to encourage students staying at home due to COVID-19 to draw rainbow pictures with their families to spread hope to everyone and overcome fear. Participants can express rainbows in various ways and submit their entries on Instagram with the hashtag ‘#LottaRainbowDrawingChallenge.’

Furthermore, to celebrate Chuseok, Lotte Corporation delivered rice to support residents through Songpa District Office on the 25th. The donated rice will be distributed to local community members, including children-headed households and elderly living alone, who are facing difficulties, via each neighborhood office.

Ryu Je-don, CEO of Lotte Corporation, said, “I hope the rainbow lights of the tower, along with the full moon of Chuseok, will bring new hope to everyone exhausted by COVID-19,” adding, “Lotte Corporation plans to continue activities that help and share with each other, especially during difficult times.”
