[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] It has been revealed that corruption in Korea Electric Power Corporation's (KEPCO) solar power business significantly increased starting in 2017.

According to data submitted by KEPCO to Kim Jeongjae, a member of the National Assembly's Industry, Trade, Energy, and Small and Medium Enterprises Committee from the People Power Party, a total of 91 KEPCO employees were disciplined in connection with the solar power business from 2017 through January of this year.

The numbers were 2 in 2017, 44 in 2018, 44 in 2019, and 1 in January this year. This marks a significant increase compared to 0 in 2015 and 2 in 2016.

The reasons for discipline, including multiple causes, were operating personal businesses (66 employees), improper linkage processing (23 employees), acceptance of money and entertainment (9 employees), and evasion of construction costs (5 employees), among others.

By type of disciplinary action, there were reprimands (53 employees), salary reductions (15 employees), suspensions (14 employees), and dismissals (9 employees).

Assemblyman Kim said, "Disciplinary actions sharply increased starting in 2017 when the Moon Jae-in administration officially began the solar power business," adding, "The level of disciplinary measures should be significantly raised and employee ethics education strengthened."
