[Asia Economy Reporter Yu Je-hoon] Lee Nak-yeon, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, visited Uljin and Yeongdeok in Gyeongbuk, which were damaged by Typhoons 'Maysak' and 'Haishen', on the 26th.

On the day, Lee visited the damage recovery sites of houses and roads in Yeonji-ri, Uljin-gun, Gyeongbuk, and the recovery field office in Ganggu-myeon, Yeongdeok-gun, to inspect the damage and recovery status.

At the Yeongdeok field office, Lee said, "There is a lot of damage especially along the East Coast of inland Gyeongbuk, so I empathize with how worried the residents must be," adding, "It has been declared a special disaster area, and a certain amount of support funds are being disbursed, but it may not be sufficient. If there is anything urgently needed or additionally required during the project, we will communicate and supplement accordingly."

He continued, "Gyeongbuk was a leading region during our industrialization era, but recently it has been showing a tendency to decline. Efforts should be made to quickly replace or upgrade it with something else. The work to transform the aging industrial complexes into smart green industrial complexes has just begun. We need to accelerate this process a bit," he said.

Regarding the Daegu New Airport plan, Lee stated, "We will continue to make efforts at the central government level to ensure the airport construction proceeds without setbacks," and added, "By doing so, Gyeongbuk will regain vitality and be able to play a role comparable to that of the industrialization era. We will work together to achieve this."
