Coast Guard Investigating 'Civil Servant Killed in North Korea Shooting' Requests Related Data from Military

[Asia Economy Reporter Sung Ki-ho] The Coast Guard, investigating the whereabouts of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries official who was shot and killed by North Korea before going missing, has requested materials related to the defection to the North from the military authorities.

According to the Coast Guard on the 26th, senior officials at the superintendent general level and investigators from the Coast Guard Agency visited the Joint Chiefs of Staff the day before to request cooperation regarding the investigation of A (47), a fisheries guidance officer belonging to the West Sea Fisheries Guidance Management Unit of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, who went missing on the 21st.

The Coast Guard requested various materials related to A’s defection to the North, which the military authorities are said to have secured.

However, Coast Guard officials returned to the Coast Guard Agency without being able to review the materials. It is reported that the military authorities stated they could not provide the materials immediately, citing the need for internal discussions.

The military reportedly said that after review, they would inform the Coast Guard by the 28th of this month whether they would provide the materials.

The Coast Guard, investigating A’s whereabouts before going missing, has not yet identified any signs related to his voluntary defection to the North through its own investigation.
