Lufthansa to Cut 1,100 Pilots Due to COVID-19 Impact

[Asia Economy Reporter Sung Ki-ho] European largest airline Lufthansa, facing a management crisis due to the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), has decided to reduce about 1,100 regular pilot positions, local media reported on the 25th (local time).

This is nearly double the 600 pilots Lufthansa decided to lay off last June.

Lufthansa plans to reduce pilots primarily through early retirement and conversion to part-time positions. Currently, many pilots at Lufthansa are on reduced working hours.

The German government compensates a portion of the wage reductions for workers on reduced hours through social insurance.
