Prosecution Requests Court to Forfeit Additional 20 Million Won Bail Deposit from Jeon Gwang-hoon

[Asia Economy Reporter Dongwoo Lee] The prosecution has requested the court to additionally confiscate a bail bond of 20 million won from Pastor Jeon Gwang-hoon of Sarang Jeil Church, who was re-arrested for violating bail conditions.

According to the legal community on the 25th, the prosecution applied for the confiscation of the bail bond to the Criminal Division 34 of the Seoul Central District Court (Presiding Judge Heo Seon-ah), which is currently hearing Pastor Jeon's case, the day before.

The court had already confiscated 30 million won out of the total 50 million won bail bond when it canceled Pastor Jeon's bail on the 7th. They are now requesting the confiscation of the remaining 20 million won as well.

When Pastor Jeon was released on bail, the court required 30 million won of the total 50 million won bail bond to be paid in cash, allowing the remaining 20 million won to be covered by a bail bond insurance. However, it is reported that Pastor Jeon paid the entire bail bond amount in cash.

Pastor Jeon was indicted in March of this year on charges of violating the Public Official Election Act for conducting pre-election campaigning at gatherings in Gwanghwamun Square ahead of the 21st general election, and for defamation against President Moon Jae-in.

During the investigation, Pastor Jeon was detained but was released on bail in April while the trial was ongoing. However, his bail was revoked after he violated conditions by leading a gathering in Gwanghwamun on Liberation Day. The court plans to hold the next hearing for Pastor Jeon on the 12th of next month.
