[Asia Economy Beijing=Special Correspondent Jo Young-shin] The Chinese People's Liberation Army conducted military exercises in Tibet, reported the Chinese state-run Global Times on the 25th.

Additionally, live-fire training was conducted to verify the military's responsiveness and the firepower of its weapons, the Chinese Ministry of National Defense added.

The Global Times reported that the Chinese military carried out day and night land and air training at an altitude of 4,500 meters on the plateau.

Regarding the exercise being conducted near the border with India, the Chinese Ministry of National Defense said that no further border troops would be dispatched to India and that this exercise was merely a scheduled regular training, giving it no particular significance.

However, since border issues with India could flare up again at any time, the Global Times reported that the Chinese military conducted the exercises as a precautionary measure.

Meanwhile, the Chinese military will conduct joint exercises (Caucasus-2020) together with the Russian military.

Tan Kefei, spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of National Defense, explained the background and significance of the joint exercises, saying, "The joint exercises with the Russian military are conducted to jointly respond to security threats and maintain regional peace and stability," and "These exercises will help develop a comprehensive and strategic cooperative partnership with Russia."
