[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Hyewon] Sinsung ENG has become the first mid-sized company to obtain Grade 1 certification under the Solar Module Carbon Certification System.

On the 25th, Sinsung ENG announced that among its four main products, one received Grade 1 certification and three received Grade 2 certification in the carbon emission verification product status announced by the Korea Energy Agency on the 24th.

The Carbon Certification System, implemented by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, calculates and differentiates the carbon emissions generated throughout the entire production process of solar module manufacturing, dividing them into three grades. Depending on the grade obtained for each product, differential scoring is applied during RPS selection bidding. France has applied the carbon footprint system since 2017, and similar systems are planned to be introduced in Europe, forecasting an expansion of the market for solar products with low carbon emissions.

The government implemented the Carbon Certification System to strengthen the competitiveness of the domestic solar industry and to foster it effectively. Through this system, a 10% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions per solar module is expected compared to the current levels. Among the total 183 solar modules from six companies announced by the Korea Energy Agency, only Hanwha Solutions and Sinsung ENG were selected for Grade 1.

A representative from Sinsung ENG stated, “We hope the transition to low carbon in solar module manufacturing will happen quickly. The National Assembly has declared a climate emergency and adopted a resolution for emergency response, showing active movement. We believe that companies must also strive to produce and distribute low-carbon products to overcome the climate crisis.”
