[Asia Economy Reporter Donghyun Choi] Seoul Housing and Communities Corporation (SH Corporation) announced on the 25th that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Guro District Office, Home&Shopping, and Green Umbrella Children’s Foundation to operate the ‘Emergency Temporary Housing’ in Guro District.

This MOU was established to support households facing housing crises such as rent arrears and forced eviction due to the economic impact of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19). The institutions agreed to mutually cooperate to operate the ‘Emergency Temporary Housing,’ which provides temporary shelter and housing upgrade services for households in housing crises.

The target residents for the Emergency Temporary Housing are households in housing crises that urgently need shelter due to the risk of losing their housing. Detailed admission criteria will be determined by the respective local government. Households with children will be given priority for admission.

Resident households will live for a certain period and receive customized support to secure stable housing, including housing counseling and linkage to welfare services.

To operate the Emergency Temporary Housing, SH Corporation will provide purchased rental housing to Guro District Office for a fee, and Guro District Office will provide customized information and services to help households in housing crises secure stable housing. Additionally, Home&Shopping will provide sponsorship funds for the operation of the Emergency Temporary Housing, and Green Umbrella Children’s Foundation will manage the sponsorship funds and support household goods within the Emergency Temporary Housing to promote housing upgrades for households in housing crises.

Meanwhile, SH Corporation plans to expand the scope of the Emergency Temporary Housing project to other local governments that wish to participate, starting with the MOU with Guro District Office.

Kim Seyong, President of SH Corporation, stated, “We hope that the Emergency Temporary Housing will serve as a housing safety net responding to the housing crisis caused by COVID-19,” and added, “We will continue to provide necessary support for the housing stability of households in housing crises.”
