[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety announced on the 25th that it had inspected 5,067 manufacturers and sellers of Chuseok seasonal food products and found 59 violations of the Food Sanitation Act and the Livestock Products Sanitary Control Act.
This inspection was conducted from the 14th to the 22nd of this month, targeting manufacturers producing Chuseok seasonal products, department stores, marts, and import sellers, in cooperation with 17 local governments.
The main violations included ▲ unsanitary handling (10 cases) ▲ failure to conduct health examinations (15 cases) ▲ failure to conduct internal hygiene education for livestock product company employees (9 cases) ▲ failure to prepare documents (5 cases) ▲ violation of livestock product self-hygiene management standards (5 cases) ▲ others* (15 cases).
The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety will have the relevant local food and drug offices or local governments take administrative actions against the detected companies and will reinspect them within three months to verify improvements.
Additionally, 2,116 samples of cooked foods such as jeon and fried foods, as well as agricultural and marine products distributed in the market, were collected and tested, confirming that 2 cases did not meet the standards and specifications. The Ministry disposed of malt with detected metallic foreign substances and peaches with excessive pesticide residues.
To ensure the safety of imported foods for ancestral rites and gifts, a detailed inspection at the import customs clearance stage was conducted from the 2nd to the 15th of this month, resulting in the suspension of import and other measures for three cases, including frozen mussel meat and frozen whiteleg shrimp meat, which did not meet the standards.
