Assemblyman Shin Jeong-hoon Introduces Bill for Gradual Mandatory RE100 Compliance in Public Institutions

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] As the climate crisis intensifies, the participation of major global companies in the RE100 campaign (100% use of renewable energy) is rapidly expanding, and in South Korea, a new system is being promoted to mandate public institutions to gradually achieve RE100.

On the 24th, Assemblyman Shin Jeong-hoon (Democratic Party of Korea, Naju-Hwasun) announced that he had introduced the "Public Institution RE100 Gradual Mandate Bill" (Amendment to the Act on the Operation of Public Institutions) as the main proposer.

The bill requires the Minister of Strategy and Finance to notify public institutions of the target proportion of renewable energy use within their total electricity consumption and to reflect the renewable energy usage performance in the management performance evaluation of public institutions, enabling them to take a leading role in responding to the climate crisis.

Currently, about 250 companies, including major corporations in the United States, Japan, and Germany, participate in the RE100 campaign, but in South Korea, due to limitations in the electricity market structure, it is difficult for companies to participate in RE100.

However, with the government and the National Assembly actively promoting the introduction of the PPA system and the Green Tariff system, an environment that can activate RE100 participation is expected to be established soon.

The Public Institution RE100 Gradual Mandate Bill is expected to be promoted alongside these laws and play a leading role in expanding renewable energy consumption.

Assemblyman Shin said, "Energy consumption centered on fossil fuels is accelerating the climate crisis," adding, "As institutional improvements are being pursued to introduce a consumption structure that can certify renewable energy such as PPA and the Green Tariff system, public institutions should take the lead in expanding renewable energy consumption and play a model role in responding to the climate crisis accordingly."
