[Asia Economy Reporter Park Cheol-eung] The National Assembly declared a 'climate emergency' and prepared a resolution on the 24th setting a goal of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
According to the content, "The National Assembly solemnly recognizes the current situation of increasing climate disasters such as droughts, floods, heatwaves, cold waves, typhoons, and large wildfires caused by excessive human use of fossil fuels and increased greenhouse gas emissions as a 'climate crisis,' and declares the current situation as a 'climate emergency' to actively resolve the climate crisis."
It also urged the government to raise its greenhouse gas reduction targets. The National Assembly stated, "We urge the government to actively raise the '2030 National Greenhouse Gas Reduction Target,' establish a responsible long-term low-carbon development strategy aiming for net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, submit it to the international community, and establish and promote policies to implement it, and to actively cooperate with the government for this purpose."
Additionally, the National Assembly decided to establish a 'Special Committee for Climate Crisis Response' within the Assembly to support budget allocation related to climate crisis response and to reform laws and systems. Furthermore, through gathering opinions and building consensus among various stakeholders, it will review climate crisis response policies such as support for technological research and human resource development, energy tax reform, and support for vulnerable groups, and provide integrated support and monitoring. The aim is to lead nationwide actions related to climate change response.
The National Assembly also stated that in the process of responding to climate change, "side effects and costs should not be passed on to socially vulnerable groups, workers, small business owners, and local communities, and by preparing measures for socially vulnerable groups such as those vulnerable to the climate crisis, the 'principle of a just transition' will be observed to overcome the climate crisis and social inequality."
