LS Cable & System Commercializes Cables Using Carbon Fiber with High Strength and Elasticity

LS Cable & System Commercializes Cables Using Carbon Fiber with High Strength and Elasticity Carbon Fiber Shielded Cable Structure Diagram

[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] LS Cable announced on the 24th that it has commercialized communication cables applying carbon fiber.

Until now, LS Cable has used copper or aluminum as shielding materials to protect cables, but this time it adopted carbon fiber, a next-generation material strategically promoted by the government.

Carbon fiber weighs only one-fourth of steel but has 10 times the strength and 7 times the elasticity. Using this carbon fiber makes the cable 10-20% lighter while improving flexibility and durability by more than 30%.

LS Cable has completed mass production preparations for local area network (LAN) cables used in smart factories and buildings for equipment operation and system management, and is applying it to industrial cables in general.

LS Cable expects active adoption especially in mobility sectors such as electric vehicles, railroads, aviation, and ships, as well as moving equipment like industrial robots and elevators.

Myeong Noh-hyun, CEO of LS Cable, said, “It is hard to find cases worldwide where carbon fiber has been applied to cables and commercialized,” adding, “We are striving to become a ‘game changer’ in the cable industry through continuous R&D on new materials and eco-friendly products.”
