[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] The government attended a related meeting to keep its promise to the world to double public sector clean energy technology research and development (R&D) investment within five years.

This year, the government announced the Korean New Deal comprehensive plan, including the Green New Deal, pursuing a transition to a low-carbon economy and society, and made efforts to keep its promise to the world.

On the 23rd, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced that Kim Jeong-il, Director of the Energy Innovation Policy Bureau, attended the '5th Mission Innovation (MI) Ministerial Meeting' held online.

The Mission Innovation declaration, made in 2016, is a pledge by participating countries to double public sector R&D investment in clean energy technologies within five years by 2021. Twenty-five countries, including Korea, the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, and China, participated.

Participants shared opinions on efforts to accelerate clean energy innovation, the promotion of MI Phase 2, and contribution plans during the meeting.

Director Kim explained that Korea aims to promote a transition to a low-carbon economy and society through the Green New Deal while overcoming the crisis caused by the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19).

He anticipated that in the post-COVID era, non-face-to-face technologies will spread, and the smartization of the energy industry through the convergence of new technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and big data will be promoted.

Accordingly, he emphasized the need to actively respond to these changes in the direction of MI Phase 2, which will be announced next year.

Meanwhile, member countries agreed to cooperate together by issuing a joint statement to specify the goals and implementation plans of MI Phase 2.

MI Phase 2 is expected to consist of an 'Innovation Platform,' such as a support system to promote clean energy investment, and 'Missions,' which are challenging tasks for technological innovation.

The detailed contents of MI Phase 2 are expected to be announced at the 6th MI Ministerial Meeting to be held in Chile in April next year.
