Yeosu Coast Guard Rescues 89-Ton Fishing Vessel Stranded on Reef

Preventing Further Damage with Rapid Emergency Measures Including Leak Sealing

[Yeosu=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Yeosu Maritime Police Station (Chief Song Min-woong) announced that at around 5 a.m. on the 23rd, vessel A (Yeosu-registered, anchovy purse seine, 89 tons, 11 crew members) ran aground about 100 meters south of Jedo, Hwajeong-myeon, Yeosu City.

At around 6:23 a.m. on the same day, Yeosu Maritime Police, upon receiving the report, dispatched patrol vessels, the maritime police rescue team, and two coastal rescue boats. They ensured safety by having all crew members wear life jackets and continuously broadcast safety messages to vessels navigating near the accident site.

Vessel A, carrying about 80 tons of catch and approximately 6,000 liters of fuel oil, suffered three hull breaches during the grounding?at the bow and midship?resulting in flooding. Fortunately, the maritime police, who responded promptly, took emergency measures such as sealing the breaches to prevent further damage.

About two hours after the report, at around 9:18 a.m., vessel A was refloated and safely entered Yeosu Gukdong Port. No marine pollution caused by fuel or other substances was detected around the accident site.

The maritime police confirmed that the captain showed no signs of intoxication in the breathalyzer test and are investigating the exact cause of the accident by questioning the crew and others involved.
