[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Choi Hyun-joo] The Small and Medium Shipbuilding Research Institute (RIMS) opened its doors on the 23rd in Changwon, Gyeongnam, raising expectations that the stagnant shipbuilding industry in Gyeongnam will take flight again.

The Small and Medium Shipbuilding Research Institute, which opened on this day, is the only specialized research institution for small and medium shipbuilding in Korea. The opening ceremony was attended by Kang Byung-yoon, Director of the Small and Medium Shipbuilding Research Institute, Ahn Wan-gi, Director of Gyeongnam Technopark, and Baek Jeong-han, Director of Changwon Industrial Promotion Agency, among others.

The institute is a specialized research institution in the shipbuilding and marine fields that conducts national R&D for small and medium-sized vessels, offshore plant support vessels, marine leisure equipment, and marine marina industries. Since its establishment in 1996, it has played a pivotal role in the small and medium shipbuilding industry, including design, hull testing, sea trials, and production technology development of small and medium-sized vessels. Its headquarters are located in Gangseo-gu, Busan.

Additionally, the institute formed a task force in July and secured temporary space at the Gyeongnam Technopark Science and Technology Promotion Center until the headquarters is established in Yeojwa-dong, Jinhae-gu. Priority projects currently underway include the smart production technology workforce training project and cooperation projects for the smartization of Navy and Coast Guard maintenance depots.

Supporting the demonstration and technology development of unmanned vessels, the institute is also promoting the establishment of a demonstration testbed for small and medium-sized special vessels and technology support projects, aiming to improve the localization rate of equipment mounted on special vessels.

Mayor Heo Seong-moo of Changwon said, “Changwon is a region with a high concentration of small and medium shipbuilders, shipbuilding equipment companies, and defense industry companies related to special vessels, but there is a lack of comprehensive specialized research institutions that can closely support the shipbuilding industry. The attraction of the Small and Medium Shipbuilding Research Institute’s Gyeongnam Changwon headquarters is expected to revitalize the small and medium shipbuilding industry and greatly contribute to strengthening technological competitiveness.”
