[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] LG Display announced on the 23rd that it will showcase media art created using transparent organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology in Itaewon, Yongsan-gu, Seoul.
This is the first time transparent OLED has been used as an exhibition artwork. Transparent OLED is thin and clear like glass, allowing artworks to be placed without spatial constraints, making it an emerging display suitable for media art.
This exhibition, called the ‘Art on OLED’ project, was created in collaboration with the trendy caf? ‘Anthracite’ and media artist Park Hoon-gyu. The exhibition period is from this month until March next year.
LG Display installed a large ‘digital art wall’ approximately 9 meters wide by connecting seven 55-inch transparent OLED panels on the first floor of Anthracite Hannam branch in Itaewon, enabling visitors to experience art made with advanced displays both inside and outside the store.
Media artist Park Hoon-gyu, who created the media art, said, “Transparent OLED made it possible to create a fantastic effect like a hologram,” adding, “Transparent OLED will inspire artists and offer new experiences to viewers.”
During the same period, LG Display plans to hold a media art exhibition using five 55-inch OLED panels at Anthracite Hapjeong branch.
Itaewon and Hapjeong-dong are so-called ‘hip places’ frequently visited by the trend-sensitive MZ generation (born from the 1980s to early 2000s). LG Display explained that this is to promote the excellence of OLED to the MZ generation and to lay the foundation for entering new businesses related to media art.
An LG Display official said, “Only OLED can provide a platform optimized for media art with precise color expression and high design freedom.”
Meanwhile, LG Display’s strategy is to actively explore new business opportunities by utilizing new OLED form factors such as transparent OLED, bendable, foldable, and rollable displays in the future.
