NVMe Products with 4th Generation PCIe
Maintaining Optimal Condition with Heat Control Technology
[Asia Economy Reporter Dongwoo Lee] Samsung Electronics is launching the next-generation consumer SSD '980 PRO' with the highest performance ever.
Samsung Electronics announced on the 23rd that the '980 PRO' doubles the speed compared to its predecessor and offers stability, making it the best product for professionals and general consumers who want excellent performance in high-performance PCs, workstations, and console gaming devices.
In particular, the company added that this product is expected to set a new standard in the consumer SSD market as the number of consumers enjoying 8K content and ultra-high-definition games at home increases due to the spread of untact lifestyles such as remote work and home gaming.
The '980 PRO' is the first NVMe product in Samsung Electronics' consumer SSD lineup to apply the 4th generation PCIe interface, achieving the highest performance by designing all key components in-house, including a dedicated controller and 6th generation V-NAND.
The PCIe 4.0 interface-based NVMe protocol can deliver speeds up to 13 times faster than the SATA interface, which supports both HDD (hard disk drive) and SSD, making it suitable for ultra-high-speed, large-capacity data processing.
The continuous read/write speeds of the '980 PRO' are up to 7000MB/s and 5000MB/s, respectively, and the random read/write speeds have also been significantly increased to up to 1,000,000 IOPS. This is about twice as fast in continuous read speed compared to the '970 PRO' released in 2018, and nearly 13 times faster than general SATA SSDs.
Excellent heat dissipation technology greatly enhances the stability of the '980 PRO'. Unlike general NVMe SSDs that rely on external heat sinks, efficient heat control is possible through a nickel-coated controller and a 'heat dissipation sheet' on the back of the product.
DTG technology maintains the drive temperature at an optimal level, minimizing performance fluctuations due to long-term use and effectively solving the heat issues of compact SSDs.
Kyungmoo Maeng, Executive Director of the Brand Product Biz Team at Samsung Electronics Memory Business Division, said, "Samsung Electronics has continuously broken through the limits of high-performance SSDs," adding, "'980 PRO' SSD will provide consumers with a new experience as the best product worthy of the world’s number one flash memory brand."
The '980 PRO' will be released in more than 40 countries worldwide, including Korea, the United States, Germany, and China, in three models: 250GB, 500GB, and 1TB, with expected consumer prices of $89.99, $149.99, and $229.99, respectively. The 2TB model is scheduled to be released at the end of 2020.
