Promotion of Accident Prevention Activities for Tractors, Two-Wheelers, Drunk Driving, and Pedestrians
[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Jeongpil] The Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Autonomous Police Unit (Chief Go Chang-gyeong) and Jeju Provincial Police Agency (Chief Kim Won-jun) announced on the 22nd that they will strengthen crackdowns on drunk driving and traffic law violations to prevent traffic accidents during the autumn harvest season.
The Autonomous Police Unit decided to conduct joint crackdowns with the Jeju Provincial Police Agency following residents' opinions that nationwide motorcycle fatal accidents and drunk driving accidents have been increasing recently, and that enforcement of traffic law violations has become lax due to the spread of COVID-19 infections.
In Jeju Province, there was one fatal accident involving a farm tractor last year, and two this year (one in August and one in September). As of September 15, drunk driving traffic accidents increased by 26.3% compared to the previous year, showing a higher increase rate than the national average of 14.2%.
The Autonomous Police Unit and the Provincial Police Agency are promoting a comprehensive traffic accident prevention plan for the autumn harvest season divided into four areas.
The Autonomous Police and the Provincial Police Agency decided to carry out prevention activities divided into △ farm tractor accidents △ motorcycle accidents △ drunk driving accidents △ pedestrian accidents.
As farm tractor accidents have occurred consecutively in the suburban areas during the autumn harvest season, the daily traffic motorcycle team patrols 2 to 3 villages in the suburban area, attaching reflective stickers to farm tractors to secure visibility and ensure safety by enforcing low-speed driving on the Jeju Olle Road.
To prevent motorcycle accidents, traffic patrol car personnel are deployed in urban areas to crack down on traffic violations by quick service and delivery motorcycles, and motorcycles operating in suburban areas are guided to use the lower lanes while reflective sticker attachment activities are conducted simultaneously.
Drunk driving crackdowns will continue with daily nighttime enforcement as before, while also strengthening crackdowns on hangover driving during morning commutes and daytime hours, conducting enforcement regardless of day or night.
Additionally, ‘spot crackdowns’ will be conducted by moving through areas vulnerable to drunk driving to spread the atmosphere of eradicating drunk driving.
Focusing on areas where pedestrian accidents occur, 40 patrol routes and key locations are designated during sunrise and sunset hours to carry out accident prevention activities, and safe return measures are also implemented to prevent accidents involving intoxicated pedestrians.
Go Chang-gyeong, Chief of the Autonomous Police Unit, said, “We will do our best to establish a traffic safety culture that complies with traffic laws to prevent traffic accidents.”
