[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Jae-hee] German Chancellor Angela Merkel called for the expansion of the United Nations Security Council at the 75th UN General Assembly held on the 22nd.
In her virtual speech that day, Chancellor Merkel stated, "The UN Security Council often reaches a deadlock when clear decisions are required," and added, "Reform is necessary."
She continued, "Germany is ready to take responsibility and is willing to do so in an expanded Security Council."
Chancellor Merkel cited the COVID-19 pandemic as an example, saying, "To solve global problems, understanding and cooperation beyond borders are needed."
Referring to international security issues such as the Libyan and Syrian civil wars, Merkel emphasized that even when faced with adversity, all efforts must be made to find practical and common solutions.
She added, "The UN must continue to evolve to respond to global challenges in the 21st century," and expressed hope that "the UN and its member states will have the courage, strength, and sense of community to meet these challenges."
Meanwhile, Germany has consistently called for the expansion of the Security Council's permanent members (the United States, the United Kingdom, France, China, and Russia) to secure a balance of power in the international community.
