[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kim Bong-ju] A family enjoying a barbecue party on an Australian beach was surrounded by a large swarm of crabs.

According to the Daily Mail on the 22nd, a family in Australia was camping and having a barbecue party on Christmas Island, famous for its beautiful scenery in the northwest of Australia, when they were suddenly surrounded by about 50 coconut crabs.

The coconut crab can grow up to 1 meter in length, has a keen sense of smell, and looks very frightening but is harmless. They often steal food from campsites in groups.

It appears that the coconut crabs approached after smelling the food at the campsite that day as well.

According to photos presumed to have been taken by the camping family, the crabs are searching for food among people sitting on chairs.

The people do not seem surprised at all by the swarm of crabs.

One crab was even photographed climbing up a table leg to eat food.

Mrs. Ruetichi, who was camping, said, "We come here often, but this is the first time we've seen such a sight," adding, "At first, about 20 crabs appeared, but later the children counted and found there were 52."

She said, "While eating, the crabs kept climbing onto the table, so we picked them off one by one by hand. The crabs were really cute."
