Serious Son Preference in India... Abandoned or Aborted Girls
2015-2017, 896 Females per 1000 Males in India
[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kim Bong-ju] A man in India with five daughters attacked his pregnant wife with a weapon to check the fetus's gender.
According to the Times of India and others on the 22nd, in Budown, Uttar Pradesh, India, on the evening of the 19th, Indian man Pannalal (43) swung a weapon at his pregnant wife (35)'s abdomen. The wife was seriously injured and is reportedly receiving treatment in the hospital's intensive care unit.
In the police investigation, the victim's family stated, "The father of the child swung a sickle saying he wanted to check the fetus's gender. He already had five daughters and wanted a son." The police are investigating the exact motive behind the crime.
It is also reported that after Pannalal heard from a religious person that "you will have a sixth daughter," he demanded his wife to have an abortion, but when she tried to protect the fetus, he attacked her with a weapon.
The preference for sons in India is at a serious level, with as many as 60 million women not even registered in the family registry.
In Indian families, the birth of a boy is celebrated, but the birth of a girl faces the opposite situation. This is because parents often take on large debts to prepare the dowry required when their daughters marry.
Illegal abortions of female fetuses still occur, especially in rural areas of India.
Meanwhile, according to Indian government statistics, as of 2015-2017, there were 896 females per 1,000 males.
