[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] The government visited market sites to gather opinions on the temporary increase of the gift value limit for agricultural, livestock, and fishery products during the Chuseok holiday to 200,000 won.

On the 22nd at 2 p.m. in Seoul, the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission held a meeting with related organizations in agriculture, livestock, fisheries, and distribution, including the Korea Federation of Small and Medium Business and the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation, to promote the effect of the policy to raise the gift value limit for agricultural, livestock, and fishery products.

At the meeting, the Commission and related organizations discussed active promotion and sales activation measures to uphold the purpose of amending the Improper Solicitation and Graft Act to overcome the economic crisis.

Immediately after the meeting, Chairperson Jeon Hyun-hee visited Mangwon Market in Mapo-gu, Seoul. She encouraged small business owners, purchased agricultural, livestock, and fishery products, and listened to voices from the field through a meeting with the merchants' association.

Recently, the difficulties faced by the agriculture, livestock, and fishery industries have been severe due to an increase in consumers refraining from visiting their hometowns for Chuseok amid the spread of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and quarantine measures, compounded by typhoon damage.

Chairperson Jeon said, "Considering the damage situation of the agriculture, livestock, and fishery industries, since the enforcement decree of the Improper Solicitation and Graft Act was amended with difficulty, I ask for the great interest and cooperation of all related parties so that it can be a practical help to farmers and fishermen."

Earlier, on the 7th, the Commission, in consultation with related ministries and through a plenary meeting, raised the gift value limit for agricultural, livestock, and fishery products such as Korean beef, which public officials can exceptionally receive during the Chuseok period, from the existing 100,000 won to 200,000 won.

The adjustment period for this value limit is from the 10th of last month until the 4th of next month, when the Chuseok holiday ends. Gifts sent by mail during this period, even if received after the adjustment period, are also included.
