Gwangju City Election Commission Strengthens Preventive Activities Against Illegal Acts During Chuseok

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] The Gwangju Metropolitan City Election Commission announced on the 22nd that it will strengthen guidance and prevention activities against illegal acts ahead of the upcoming Chuseok holiday.

The Gwangju Election Commission plans to actively provide information on relevant laws and major violation cases to ensure that political parties, members of the National Assembly, local council members, heads of local governments, and prospective candidates do not violate the law due to ignorance.

Furthermore, if illegal acts occur despite prior guidance, strict measures such as filing complaints will be taken.

Permissible activities during this Chuseok holiday include ▲posting customary holiday banners in the name of political parties or local governments on the streets at least 180 days before the election day ▲sending customary holiday greetings via text messages ▲sending greeting cards with customary holiday messages to many constituents at least 180 days before the election day.

Prohibited activities include ▲providing free homecoming or return buses to constituents or people connected to constituents ▲offering fruits or gifts to senior centers and elderly clubs in the district under the pretext of holiday greetings ▲posting banners or sending greeting cards containing election campaign content disguised as holiday greetings.

In particular, voters should be aware that if they receive money or food from politicians, a fine ranging from 10 to 50 times up to a maximum of 30 million KRW may be imposed.

A representative of the Gwangju Election Commission stated, “We will maintain a system for reporting and receiving election law violations even during the Chuseok holiday period. If you discover any illegal acts, please report them to the relevant district election commission or call 1390 anywhere nationwide.”
