[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Chang-won] Jeju Special Self-Governing Province announced on the 21st that it will hold a kickoff meeting for the detailed design of the wide-area food waste treatment facility project at 3 p.m. on the 22nd in the conference room on the 3rd floor of the Construction Hall.
The wide-area food waste treatment facility project is being implemented to establish a stable waste treatment and a resource circulation system using organic waste resources (biogas facility) due to population increase and insufficient treatment capacity caused by aging existing treatment facilities.
This facility, located in Saekdal-dong, Seogwipo City, will be built to handle 340 tons of food waste per day, with a total project cost of 106.969 billion KRW, and is scheduled to be completed in 2023.
The project is being promoted as a national project through site agreement by the Saekdal-dong Village Association and consultations with the Ministry of Strategy and Finance and the Ministry of Environment.
As a result of the announcement for a design-build lump-sum bid in December last year, Taeyoung Consortium Co., Ltd. was selected as the qualified company for the detailed design, but the kickoff meeting was delayed due to a lawsuit filed by a losing bidder for an injunction to suspend the bidder selection process.
However, the Jeju District Court dismissed the injunction lawsuit on the 9th, and Jeju Province decided to hold the kickoff meeting for the detailed design.
Through the kickoff meeting, Jeju Province plans to review the basic design results including food waste intake and pretreatment facilities, anaerobic digestion process, digestion sludge and sewage treatment processes, and share the progress of the work.
They also intend to seek measures to minimize inconvenience to residents caused by food waste treatment and address potential issues that may arise during operation.
Moon Kyung-sam, Director of the Environmental Conservation Bureau of Jeju Province, said, “We share the progress of the work through monthly meetings with the Saekdal-dong Village Association, Bonggae-dong Village Association, and residents to resolve inconveniences,” adding, “We will strive to promptly address any inconveniences that arise during the project process.”
