Members of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions Public Transport Workers' Union and the Eastar Jet Pilots' Union held a press conference on the 29th at the Southern District Prosecutors' Office in Yangcheon-gu, Seoul, to file a complaint against Lee Sang-jik, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, and his family. Considering the ongoing uncertainties surrounding the M&A, they had been weighing the timing, but following the final cancellation of the Stock Purchase Agreement (SPA) with Jeju Air last week, they decided to report to the prosecution on suspicions of illicit succession to his children and various paper company allegations. [Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] The People Power Party criticized President Moon Jae-in for mentioning 'fairness' on Youth Day, arguing that 'selective fairness' was applied to the family of Lee Sang-jik, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea.
On the 21st, Heo Cheong-hoe, deputy spokesperson of the People Power Party, said in a statement, "Although he claimed to be a fairness evangelist, Representative Lee was not fair."
He pointed out, "Lee's teenage and twenties children became the largest shareholders of Eastar Jet through a company established in 2015 with a capital of 30 million won," adding, "This is like a dream for young people struggling to find employment."
Deputy spokesperson Heo criticized, "Eastar Jet is under suspicion of illegal transfer of assets to children, wage arrears, embezzlement, and breach of trust, yet Representative Lee has walked a path of success under the Moon Jae-in administration," continuing, "He served as a member of the Presidential Committee on Jobs in 2017, chairman of the Small and Medium Business Corporation in 2018, and even received a nomination in the 2020 April 15 general election, successfully securing re-election. At this point, the public cannot help but have doubts."
He pointed out, "At the very least, the president should have taken responsibility for the unfair incidents and offered a comprehensive apology in his Youth Day commemorative speech," adding, "However, the president did not offer even a single word of apology to the public."
Deputy spokesperson Heo expressed, "We express serious regret together with the public regarding the president's awareness of the situation confirmed on this day," and criticized, "The Democratic Party's Ethics Inspection Team must conduct a strict investigation and, if problems are revealed, request thorough investigations not only politically but also by the investigative authorities."
