Opening of 'Jamunbak Art Residency' on the 23rd... Providing a Free Working Environment and Opportunities for Mutual Exchange and Growth for Artists
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Jongno-gu (Mayor Kim Young-jong) will open the 'Jamunbak Art Residency' (5 Pyeongchang 31-gil) in Pyeongchang-dong on the 23rd to provide cultural artists with a stable and free working environment and offer opportunities for growth based on mutual exchange.
At the opening ceremony on the 23rd, Mayor Kim Young-jong and Lee Soon-jong, Chairman of the Jamunbak Cultural Forum, among others, will attend and hold a meeting to discuss future activity plans with the resident artists.
Prior to the opening, the district recruited resident artists last month and received a total of 124 applications from 139 people. After the first document screening and the second interview screening, 11 teams comprising 14 final resident artists were announced, selecting artists from various age groups born between 1960 and 1997 across fields such as ▲Fine Arts ▲Architecture ▲Media Art ▲Theater and Film ▲Music ▲Engineering (AI).
Their residency period is from the opening day on the 23rd of this month until August 31 of next year, during which they will be provided with independent and open exclusive spaces, small community and exhibition creative shared spaces, among others.
Additionally, they will participate in the ‘Local Art Project’ aimed at small business owners and workshops conducting creative activities, and hold exhibitions open to residents showcasing their workspaces and achievements. They are required to participate in growth support programs at least four times to develop as cultural artists contributing to local cultural development.
The district also plans to operate a mentoring program between resident artists and veteran local artists to create opportunities to share philosophies and visions about art.
Furthermore, high-quality cultural and artistic classes for local residents, discussion forums involving domestic and international experts, and mutual exchange programs are being planned.
Meanwhile, from the 18th to the 20th, the '2020 8th Jamunbak Cultural Festival,' where residents and artists communicate and exchange through culture and arts, was held online for three days.
Since 2013, Jongno-gu has continuously held the ‘Jamunbak Cultural Festival’ to widely promote the Jamunbak Creative Arts Village and to share diverse genres of culture among residents, communities, cultural and artistic institutions, merchants, and companies.
This year, due to the impact of COVID-19, programs that residents could enjoy on-site could not be fully presented, but various performances, forums, and lectures will be live-streamed through the Jamunbak Cultural Forum’s YouTube and Instagram Live as much as last year.

Mayor Kim Young-jong said, “I am very pleased to provide emerging artists with opportunities to freely engage in creative activities through the opening of this residency. We will continue to utilize the abundant cultural and artistic resources in the district to communicate with local residents and artists and strive for the development of culture and arts beyond Jongno and nationwide.” He added, “We ask for your great interest in the Jamunbak Cultural Festival, which will be broadcast live online without an audience to prevent COVID-19.”
