Shinhan Card and KISA Jointly Host Data Competition

[Asia Economy Reporter Ki Ha-young] Shinhan Card announced on the 20th that it will jointly host the ‘2020 Data Competition (Datathon)’ with the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA).

This competition was organized together by the two leading companies in the data economy to discover outstanding talents in the digital and data fields.

The competition consists of two categories: the ‘Data Analysis Division,’ which involves developing a household type estimation model using anonymized household member data, and the ‘Service Development Division,’ which involves planning and developing new contactless services based on merchant sales information.

The Data Analysis Division is being held for the first time this year, providing analysis data based on the vast big data owned by Shinhan Card. Following the recent passage of the Data 3 Act, this is the first data analysis competition hosted by a card company using pseudonymized and anonymized information.

The competition will proceed with an online preliminary round from the 21st of this month to November 13th, lasting about 50 days, followed by an offline final. Applications for participation can be submitted from the 21st via the KISA website.

Eligible participants are startups and university (graduate) students. Six winning teams will receive awards including the Shinhan Card President’s Award and the KISA Director’s Award, along with a total prize of 8 million KRW. Additionally, winners will be granted exemption from the document screening process when applying for new positions at Shinhan Card.

Park Chang-hoon, Head of Shinhan Card’s Life Business Division, said, "This data competition will be an opportunity to discover talents with data analysis skills and the ability to plan contactless services," adding, "We will continue to make various efforts to activate data distribution in connection with Shinhan Financial Group’s N.E.O. project and actively contribute to government policies."
