[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] The Jeonnam Provincial Police Agency announced on the 20th that it will conduct a special crackdown on drunk driving until November 17 to prevent a series of recent drunk driving traffic accidents.
As of the end of August, the number of traffic fatalities caused by drunk driving in Jeonnam Province was 18, the same as the previous year, but the number of drunk driving accidents increased slightly by 8.1%, and the number of injuries increased by 8.9%.
Accordingly, the Jeonnam police plan to frequently change the locations of drunk driving checkpoints and conduct surprise comprehensive crackdowns throughout the province every week to instill the awareness that "drunk driving will definitely be caught."
In particular, they will actively consider punishment for accomplices (aiding and abetting), such as passengers and those who encourage drunk driving, as well as detention and vehicle seizure for habitual drunk drivers.
Additionally, to reduce traffic accident casualties, they will also conduct crackdowns on failure to wear seat belts.
A Jeonnam police official said, "The awareness that drunk driving is a criminal act that harms others has spread to all citizens, and since the level of punishment has been strengthened, even if you have had one drink, you must never get behind the wheel, and you should develop the habit of wearing a seat belt when driving a vehicle." He urged all residents to participate in establishing a proper traffic culture.
